1. Choose an Architect to design the building, then choose a General Contractor to construct it. While this is a common method, it does not always result in the best value.
2. Choose a General Contractor before design. The contractor will help you find an architect that may specialize in the type of project that you want to build and the two collaborate on the design of the building from its inception. This is called a Design/Build method and is the best method to ensure that the building matches your budget. The General Contractor has a better pulse of the costs associated with different building types, finishes, and equipment than an Architect. By designing the building together, the actual cost of the building can be reduced without sacrificing function or design.
